May 23, Touring Bigouden Country with Yann

Yann B. leads a tour of his home country, through chapels and ruins. In the past seven days, Roger has probably seen more chapels and churches than in the past seven years. As for me, I stopped here to protect myself against infertility. It is a phallic stone dating from the Iron Age.

We're following the "Three Chapels Way". The phallic stone stood next to the chapel of Saint-Vio. We reach the chapel of St. Evy, I took this picture because it is next to a reed bed. Wiki says a reed bed is an area on the edge of lakes, ponds, marshes and backwaters of river reeds where only reeds grow. I did not see any water, only reeds.

We're supposed to meet Richard, a friend of Francoise, to observe the fishermen's return and live day catch auction. We don't know each other so actually getting together was not easy. It took a dozen phone calls (useful, though, those cell phones) and about twenty minutes. Finally, there we were. Unfortunately, that's the kind of occasion where the implant is of very little help.

They're coming in. There's no time to lose, the first arrivals make the best sales. On the Waterfront, people work to take delivery of and transfer the catch.picture taking.

This time, I get lucky, these people are working more slowly and I manage to take a few pictures.

In the end, we have little time to talk with Richard, a photographer who still uses film. He himself has things to do and people to see, he did not come to the auction for fun, and Yann must go back to prepare dinner because he has other guests.

Delicious scampis as a starter followed with fillet of pout (a French fish I'd never even heard of) also bought in Guilvenec. And I again committed the sin of mayonnaise. Crêpes flambé, with fruit, very lovely. And rosé. We are not complaining.

The two other guests work in healthcare, he is a dentist, she's a general practitioner. It is interesting to talk about our respective health systems, throwing in a few observations about the American health system. In france, the budget cuts are unpopular. In that respect, in the years it took for the fight to eliminate the provincial deficit, Quebecers were more resigned, I think.

Weather, a few clouds, not super hot. I often wear my fleece jacket.

Tired. Dodo. Tomorrow, starting for La Rochelle. The GPS says four and a half hours.
